What your child will learn

  • Calculate the mean
  • Find the median, including with an even number of values
  • Find the mode
  • Calculate the range
  • Compare data sets using averages and range

The method

  2. Median: put in order, find the middle.
  3. Mode: the most common value.
  4. Range: biggest minus smallest.

Key words: mean, median, mode, range, average.

Worked examples

The first three practice questions from the lesson, with every step.

Question 1

Find the mean of 3, 5, 7, 9.

  1. Step 1: Total: 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 = 24
  2. Step 2: How many: 4
  3. Step 3: Mean = 24 ÷ 4 = 6

Answer: 6

Question 2

Find the mean of 12, 15, 9, 10, 14.

  1. Step 1: Total: 12 + 15 + 9 + 10 + 14 = 60
  2. Step 2: How many: 5
  3. Step 3: Mean = 60 ÷ 5 = 12

Answer: 12

Question 3

Find the mean of 2, 8, 5, 1, 4, 10.

  1. Step 1: Total: 2 + 8 + 5 + 1 + 4 + 10 = 30
  2. Step 2: How many: 6
  3. Step 3: Mean = 30 ÷ 6 = 5

Answer: 5
