Year 8 · Science · Breathing and respiration · Lesson 2
Aerobic respiration
What aerobic respiration is, its word equation, where it happens, what the energy is used for, and how to show respiration is taking place.

23-minute video lesson
Teaching, worked examples and 20 practice questions solved step by step.
Watch free for a monthWhat your child will learn
- Describe respiration and how it differs from breathing
- Write the word equation for aerobic respiration
- State that respiration happens in mitochondria
- Describe uses of the energy released
- Describe tests that show respiration
The method
- Respiration is a reaction in every living cell that releases energy from glucose.
- Aerobic respiration: glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water (energy released).
- It happens in the mitochondria; muscle cells have lots of them.
- Limewater turns milky with the carbon dioxide made in respiration.
Key words: respiration, aerobic, glucose, oxygen, carbon dioxide, mitochondria, energy, limewater.
