What your child will learn

  • Understand volume
  • Use l × w × h
  • Use cubic units
  • Find missing lengths
  • Link cm³ and litres

The method

  1. Find l, w and h.
  2. Multiply all three.
  3. Units: cm³.
  4. Missing length? Divide.

Key words: volume, cuboid, cubic centimetre, length, litre.

Worked examples

The first three practice questions from the lesson, with every step.

Question 1

Find the volume of a cuboid 3 cm long, 2 cm wide and 2 cm high.

  1. Step 1: Sketch it
  2. Step 2: Volume = length × width × height
  3. Step 3: = 3 × 2 × 2 = 6 × 2 = 12 cm³

Answer: 12 cm³

Question 2

Find the volume of a cuboid 5 cm long, 4 cm wide and 2 cm high.

  1. Step 1: Sketch it
  2. Step 2: Volume = length × width × height
  3. Step 3: = 5 × 4 × 2 = 20 × 2 = 40 cm³

Answer: 40 cm³

Question 3

Find the volume of a cuboid 7 cm long, 3 cm wide and 2 cm high.

  1. Step 1: Sketch it
  2. Step 2: Volume = length × width × height
  3. Step 3: = 7 × 3 × 2 = 21 × 2 = 42 cm³

Answer: 42 cm³
